In his 38 years as a soldier in theaters of war from the Middle East to Europe, the commander of Special Operations Command says he's never had to look up. But those days are coming to an end.
"I've never had to look up because the US has always maintained air superiority," Army General Richard D. Clarke said during a discussion Friday at the Aspen Security Forum in Aspen, Colorado. "We won't always have that luxury," he added.
Cheap quadcopters and larger UAVs are disrupting the status quo as military and insurgents increasingly rely on them, the general said.
"If Russia runs out of them for Ukraine and they go to Iran to buy more, [that] should be a little worrying for all of us because it shows how valuable they can be in the future fight," he said.
