Sony just announced that Sega is widely loved yakuza Series of criminal underworld simulation will be debuting on its PlayStation Plus subscription service soon. In fact, the entire Mainline series is coming.
Today, Sony announced this on its blog that the most important entries in the yakuza series, which follows Kazuma Kiryu's story across seven different titles, will be available for PlayStation Plus subscribers next month. Yakuza: Like a dragonwhich changes pacing to tell the story of Ichiban Kasuga - with a surprise switch to turn-based combat - will also join the service.
However, they don't all come to everyone. Yakuza: Like a dragon will be available in Essential, Extra, and Premium subscription tiers, but Yakuza 0, kiwamiand kiwami 2 will only be available on Extra and Premium. Sony's blog promises that the rest of the main series will be available later in the year, but only at the Premium and Extra tiers.
(Sony's blog post currently seems to have a bug about which games are available at which level specifically. kotaku contacted Sony for clarification.)
yakuza first released on the PlayStation 2 in 2005. An open-world action-adventure game with RPG-like combat mechanics, yakuza introduced us to Kazuma Kiryu, a soulful gangster embroiled in a tale of crime and violence. Seven more games would follow over the years, having since released on almost every Xbox and Sony console, as well as PC. Remaster of the first two games, renamed to Yakuza Kiwami and kiwami 2, Launched in 2016 and 2017.
That yakuza Series is legendary among fans for maintaining a standard of solid, memorable writing with a wide range of features and side quests that have allowed players to get lost in seedy, beautifully designed neighborhoods. The series hasn't been afraid to take some risks, with the latest entry delivering a sharp pivot for turn-based combat alongside some hilarious story beats.
The inclusion of these hit games helps round out the PlayStation Plus value proposition, with games like Stray, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergradeand tons of Assassin's Creed Titles also added to the service earlier this month. The tiered structure has caused some confusionbut as more and more hit games hit the market over time, the prospect of finding out becomes all the more appealing.
