This is the fourth edition of a book that has been widely regarded as a classic since it was first published over twenty years ago.

The authors explained what software architecture is, why it is important, and how to become a software architect.

The first part of the book takes these questions one by one, asking what software architecture is, what constitutes "good" architecture, and why it's important.

The second part of the book deals in detail with what the authors refer to as "attributes of quality". They first explain what they mean by this in a chapter on understanding quality characteristics, in which they deal with the factors with which the “benefit” of a product can be measured.
